Grant Williams elbows Jayson Tatum; assessed flagrant 2
Boston Celtics forward Grant Williams was ejected from Tuesday night's game against the New York Knicks after elbowing New York forward Julius Randle in the face.
Williams was assessed a flagrant 2 foul on the play, which occurred with 3:33 remaining in the third quarter and the Celtics leading 85-70.
Randle was driving to the basket when Williams came over to help defend. Williams' elbow made contact with Randle's face, and Randle immediately fell to the ground.
Williams was ejected from the game, and the Knicks went on to win 106-104.
The flagrant 2 foul is the most severe type of foul in the NBA. It is assessed when a player commits a "flagrant foul" that is deemed to be "unnecessary and excessive."
Williams' elbow was deemed to be unnecessary and excessive because it was not a basketball play.
The flagrant 2 foul is an automatic ejection, and Williams will now be suspended for one game.
This is the first time that Williams has been ejected from an NBA game.
He is averaging 7.2 points and 3.5 rebounds per game this season.
The Celtics are now 23-24 on the season.
They are currently in seventh place in the Eastern Conference.
