Hurricane Helene was a weak, short-lived tropical cyclone that existed from September 11-13, 1965. Helene was the 8th tropical storm and the 5th hurricane of the 1965 Atlantic hurricane season. Helene reached maximum sustained winds of 70 miles per hour (115 km/h) and a minimum barometric pressure of 995 millibars (29.4 inHg). Helene made landfall along the Florida Panhandle near St. Marks before dissipating over Georgia.

Hurricane Helene's Formation and Movement

Hurricane Helene began as a tropical depression on September 11, 1965, near the Bahamas. The depression moved west-northwest and gradually strengthened into a tropical storm later that day. Helene reached hurricane status on September 12 while located about 150 miles (240 km) south of Apalachicola, Florida.

Hurricane Helene's Impact

Hurricane Helene made landfall just south of St. Marks, Florida, around 11:00 PM EDT on September 12. The hurricane brought heavy rainfall and gusty winds to the area, causing flooding and power outages. Helene also produced a storm surge of up to 6 feet (1.8 m) along the coast. After making landfall, Helene continued to weaken as it moved inland. The storm dissipated over Georgia on September 13. Hurricane Helene caused an estimated $100,000 in damage (1965 USD). There were no reported deaths or injuries associated with the storm.
