Russian forces claim to have shot down a missile over Oryol region: damage reported
Moscow says debris from the missile crashed into a residential building, damaging an apartment
Russian forces on Sunday said they had shot down a missile over the Oryol region, about 200 miles (320 kilometers) south of Moscow, and that debris from the missile had crashed into a residential building, damaging an apartment.
The Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement that the missile was shot down by an S-400 air defense system, and that no casualties were reported.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions between Russia and Ukraine, and follows a series of attacks on Russian territory that Moscow has blamed on Kyiv.
Ukraine has denied responsibility for the attacks, and has accused Russia of fabricating them as a pretext for further aggression.
The Oryol region is home to a number of military installations, including an air base and a missile defense system.
The incident is the latest in a series of attacks on Russian territory that have been blamed on Ukraine.
In recent weeks, there have been explosions at a military airfield in Crimea, a fuel depot in Belgorod, and a bridge linking Crimea to Russia.
Russia has accused Ukraine of carrying out the attacks, but Kyiv has denied responsibility.
The Kremlin has warned that it will respond to any further attacks on Russian territory, and has threatened to target Ukrainian infrastructure.
The United States and its allies have condemned the attacks on Russian territory, and have called on Moscow to de-escalate the situation.
The United States has also provided Ukraine with billions of dollars in military aid, and has deployed additional troops to Eastern Europe.
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has been ongoing since 2014, when Moscow annexed Crimea and backed separatists in eastern Ukraine.
The war has claimed the lives of more than 14,000 people, and has displaced millions more.
