Tokyo: Taylor Fritz beats Frances Tiafoe to win the Japan Open

Fritz claims his second title of the year

Taylor Fritz defeated Frances Tiafoe 7-6 (3), 7-6 (2) in the final of the Japan Open on Sunday to capture his second ATP Tour title of the year.

The match was a close contest throughout, with both players serving well and creating few chances for their opponent.

Fritz, who is ranked 12th in the world, was particularly impressive on serve, winning 84% of his first-serve points.

Tiafoe, who is ranked 19th in the world, fought valiantly but was unable to convert any of his three break points.

Fritz broke Tiafoe's serve in the 12th game of the first set to take the lead.

He then broke Tiafoe's serve again in the 10th game of the second set to clinch the victory.

"I'm really happy to win my second title of the year," Fritz said after the match.

"I played really well today and I'm just glad I was able to get the win."

Fritz has had a successful season in 2023, winning two titles and reaching the semifinals of the Australian Open.

He is now projected to move up to 11th in the world rankings, a career high.
