Wellington Phoenix FC to Base Themselves in Auckland for the Remainder of the Season
A-League Men club Wellington Phoenix FC will be basing themselves in Auckland for the remainder of the 2022/23 season.
The club made the announcement on Friday, citing the ongoing uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 border restrictions as the reason for the move. Phoenix had been playing their home games in Wollongong, Australia, since the start of the season, but the club said that the travel and quarantine requirements were making it difficult to maintain a consistent schedule.
The move to Auckland will allow Phoenix to play their remaining home games at Eden Park, which has been the club's traditional home ground since their inception in 2007.
Auckland has been a great place for us," Phoenix general manager David Dome said. "The people here have been very welcoming, and we're grateful for the support that we've received."
Phoenix are currently seventh in the A-League Men standings, and they will be hoping to make a late push for the finals when the season resumes in February.
