FC Spartak Moscow parts ways with Andrey Chervichenko, appoints Dejan Stanković as new head coach
Former PFC CSKA Moscow manager Dejan Stanković has been appointed as the new head coach of FC Spartak Moscow, replacing Andrey Chervichenko.
Chervichenko had been in charge of Spartak since 2021, but has left the club by mutual consent following a disappointing season in which the team finished eighth in the Russian Premier League.
Stanković, a former Serbia international, has signed a two-year contract with Spartak and will be tasked with improving the team's fortunes on the pitch.
The 44-year-old has a wealth of experience in management, having previously coached Red Star Belgrade, Inter Milan and the Serbia national team.
He will be hoping to make a similar impact at Spartak, who have not won a major trophy since 2017.
Stanković's appointment has been welcomed by Spartak fans, who are hoping that he can help the team challenge for the title next season.
The Serbian coach will be looking to build a team capable of competing with the likes of Zenit Saint Petersburg and PFC CSKA Moscow.
He will also be hoping to make an impact in the UEFA Champions League, a competition in which Spartak have not progressed beyond the group stage since 2017.
Stanković's first game in charge of Spartak will be a friendly against FC Rostov on July 2.
The new season of the Russian Premier League begins on July 17, with Spartak facing off against PFC CSKA Moscow in their opening game.
