Typhoon Cong-Rey Forces Evacuations for Over 280,000 in Eastern China

Cyclone Brings Heavy Rain, Strong Winds, and Storm Surges

Typhoon Cong-Rey has made landfall in eastern China, bringing torrential rain, strong winds, and storm surges that have forced the evacuation of over 280,000 people.

The typhoon, which made landfall in Fujian province early Wednesday morning, is expected to dump up to 50 centimeters of rain in some areas, triggering fears of flooding and landslides.

Authorities have issued red alerts, the highest level of warning, for several coastal cities in Fujian, including Fuzhou, the provincial capital. Schools and businesses have been closed, and residents have been urged to stay indoors.

Coastal Areas Particularly Vulnerable

Coastal areas are particularly vulnerable to the typhoon's impact, with storm surges of up to 2 meters expected. The National Meteorological Center has warned of "significant" damage to infrastructure and property.

The typhoon is moving slowly northwestward and is expected to continue to bring heavy rain and strong winds to eastern China for the next few days.

Government Response

The Chinese government has dispatched emergency response teams to the affected areas to assist with evacuations and disaster relief efforts.

The Ministry of Civil Affairs has released 50 million yuan (US$7.2 million) in emergency funds to support the response efforts.

Previous Typhoons in China

Typhoon Cong-Rey is the latest in a series of powerful typhoons to hit China this year.

In August, Typhoon Hato killed at least 25 people and caused widespread damage in southern China.
